Well, I've run some experiments with texture compression and encoding formats, and here are the results (format and filesize) I got for my face texture:
.psd (original file) = 359kb .dds 8:8:8:8 ARGB (32bit) = 341kb .dds 8:8:8 RGB (24bit) = 256kb .dds DXT1 RGB (no alpha) = 43kb .tga 32bit compressed = 237kb .tga 24bit compressed = 180kb
The 16bit formats looked too bad to even compare. As you can see, the DXT1 encoding yields the best compression, but it causes some quality loss (as I had said before, it apparently reduces the color definition, creating some "color blocks" where the transition between color shades should be smooth).
The best format cost-benefit-wise, IMHO, is the .tga 24-bit. Sure, it's much larger than the DXT1, and those 135 extra kbs, multiplied by 40 heads (20 normal, 20 vampiric), would cause the mod to be 5.4 megabytes bigger (when unzipped), just for the added quality on the face textures. I don't know if you guys are willing to do that.
so, oldie. if you want me to re-encode my face texture in one of those formats (as I said, .tga-24bit is my favourite, but .dds-DXT1 is much smaller), just say and I'll do it. I might even include one or two tweaks in the shading (I can't help but find one or two spots that could be shaded better, everytime I look at the faces... damn me.)

Thanks for the feedback, Korana & Solar. I never checked the bit-level compression; however, all the .tga head textures in use at the moment come in at around 200 KB; the .dds vary, but on average are around 50 KB (one fourth the size).
So, with 25 "players", the extra .tga will add about 4 MB (uncompressed) to the total. But even with standard zip compression, this reduces to 2 MB. With some of the textures already having been supplied as .tga, we're only looking at probably just over an extra megabyte of data added to the final download file. I, personally, don't think it will cause too much of a problem.

Cali, that certainly is a realistic looking "new" head you've got there. Never having had the pleasure of meeting you in RL, I can't comment on which version bears the truer likeness, but obviously you will know! It does appear that your nose is now a bit "rounder". Anyway, I look forward to receiving the new files and "updating".

btw, Cali, I don't think I've seen that coat before. Is it a new creation, and is it for use "in game"?

Ok, just took a look at the "OFFICIAL" screenshots...everything looks good. Did MO inform you of my idea for my head, oldie? If not, let me know, ill fill you in and see if you like the idea as well.

Well, you made the blouse Cali!
Ravyn Angel - I think I know what you are referring to about the head - should be covered in the "characterization" info we'll be getting out, individually.
I'm amazed at the match of eye-colour with the costume (chosen purely at random) colour. Is that the def. colouring, or will Snape still be altering the "blue"?

Cali, had a look at your site. Looks interesting, and the shoes at the bottom of it have just reminded me that none of the chars yet have shoes (all the "official" shots are bare-footed). I'd better warn Korana about this.

Thanks for the offer to "Bosmerize" Fariel, Korana. I'll hold back with forwarding her head 'till Motoki has commented - he's the one who takes the decision on "what to do about the heads".

Korana until we can get Fariel recolored can you send Oldie one of Gorg's capes with the neck band from the Metal Queen Boutique to put on her to hide the neck for taking screenshots?
Also try matching up her head to Nord or Breton textures. If it works with them you can make a custom race Nord with Wood Elf smaller proportions.

okay, oldie, I'd ask you to download the face textures at www.geocities.com/s0lar_d00m/helioskeep.html, I've saved them in 24bit-targa format, which looks better, and made the last tweak to the heads, while at it. these are 100% ready to go into the mod now (bar some file renaming you might want to do)
