I found a huge pile of old vinyl records yesterday. I quite fancy trying to get them, and a pile of taped stuff, onto CD. So, what do I need?
Record deck seems only to have loudspeaker or earphone outlets. I assume I need to borrow one with Line Out sockets?
Connection to sound card?
What software, (like free!), can I use?
What format should I store the music in if it's for storing on CD?
To summarise, what do I do?!

You should be able to use the headphone jack with the right cable. If you can find a store that sells electronic cables and such find one like this: www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=42-2387of course you can probably get away with signifigantly shorter than 6 feet, but basically you want a cable with 1/8 inch stereo plugs on both sides. One goes into the headphone jack and the other on the back of your sound card, generally to the line in hole on the sound card.

That's handy as i have one like that already ;D Just need a program to record them on now, my real one player will record from a mic or line in so maybe i'll try that unless anybody knows a better one Going to have to move my stereo though and it's not small it's about twenty years old, still works so i've never changed it but it's not like these tiny things you get now ;D

Careful inspection of the Amstrad 'box' shows that the earphone jack is one of those huge ones they used to use, (like designed for 230V!). I'll try and get a cable from town tomorrow with a big jack plug one end and a tiny one on the other. Thanks for the info Motoki, one step closer!
Thanks for the suggestion on software Cali, I've got Real One player but never use it. I'll have a look at that. I bet HWW knows of the perfect software, we'll just have to wait until he comes on! ;D

Don't know if you can get a cable like that. But I do know that converter jacks are available, like wall socket converters, that sort of thing.

I've got those as well from when i used to put headphones in my stereo which needs a large plug, have ones that make a large one small as well.
No good to Mebyon though as it's not like i can lend them to him is it ;D

Magic stuff. Tiny shop in Tomar produced about eight different ways of doing the same thing! Finally settled on a single doodad with two line out sockets on one side and big stereo jack plug on 'tother. I already have a suitable cable to use with said whatnot.
I've explored Audacity, no good as it doesn't do stereo input. Going to set up record player on the floor beside the computer. (the cable is a tad short), and see what I can get out of Real One Player tonight. I'll also have a look on the 'net for some copying software, must be a very common requirement.
Keep you posted.

I still don't actually know what format the files need to be in once on the hard disk. Maybe that software will have a manual. The problem is that we may only get one crack of the whip so I'm loath to d/l until I've got the hardware sorted out!
Right, off to play with cables and things..............
Later............

I recommend that PolderbitS software. Let's get this straight. I'm a real dimwit when it comes to this sort of thing and that $30 software seems right up my street. If you can hear it through the speakers on the machine you can record it as wav or two flavours of MP3. It's completely simple to use, it does the job and I'm going to buy it! Unfortunately it's done in real time and I've been looking at the LP and tape collection, it's huge! As Mr Oates said, "I may be some time"!
