Well i've always done mine with the Animation Shop program that came with PSP, i know you don't have that and i assume photoshop hasn't got an equivalent program. So i'm afraid i'm no help, sorry

God now your asking something ;D Well thing is i've so far only done it with a fraps film i just open it up and all the frames come up, i then delete uneccesary ones and save as an animated gif, now seeing as your having trouble with fraps you would need to do several images all slightly different and use them as your frames. A bit like stop frame animation i suppose That's about as much as i can help i'm afraid, i know it's useless but i try ;D

I've worked with an animating prigram a while back, if you leave the frames rather rought, can you have it"fill in" between animations? ...will it make smooth transitions or will I have to do it?

on mine you drag and drop into the next frame, but yours might not be like that.

I've got a "rough" beta going, but it seems to me that the tweening does not do a thing...it's still choppy as h#!!...

Oh gosh, I have made them before but it was so long ago, I forget. I probably used animation shop too though heh. It's shareware so you can download it you know.

I've never been able to figure out ImageReady. I, too, use AS3 that comes with PSP.
