There are many types of compressed file, but generally, the most popular types are zip (most common and supported by nearly all compression tools), rar (winrar format, better compression than zip) and 7z (or 7-zip which offers the best compression). If you want to use a compression tool (like WinZip) that allows you to open a variety of compressed files, there are two excellent freeware alternatives to WinZip that can open all the popular types. These are: IZArc: www.izsoft.dir.bg/izarc.htm"IZArc is the ultimate archive utility supports many archive formats like: 7-ZIP, A, ACE, ARC, ARJ, B64, BH, BIN, BZ2, BZA, C2D, CAB, CDI, CPIO, DEB, ENC, GCA, GZ, GZA, HA, IMG, ISO, JAR, LHA, LIB, LZH, MDF, MBF, MIM, NRG, PAK, PDI, PK3, RAR, RPM, TAR, TAZ, TBZ, TGZ, TZ, UUE, WAR, XXE, YZ1, Z, ZIP, ZOO." IZarc has an interface similar to WinZip, and it's very powerful. Recommended. ZipGenius: www.zipgenius.it/This tool is also extremely useful, perhaps a little more difficult to use than IZarc but not by much. It opens a lot of filetypes but is a bigger download than IZArc. Read about it here: www.zipgenius.it/intweb/features.htmHope this is helpful. Rob.
