Well Cali, the school blocks elderscrolls.com, so I'll only be able to report when I get home... ...you might as well go look! ...Mo, is it interesting? EDIT: popped into the Summit forums (one of the few forums that are not blocked); here's all that there was to read: since 2002 Oblivion has been under development ...so, I don't know if elderscrolls.com has more to say or not, I'll make a post when I get home...

Ah but is it real ingame art or ingame video art Doesn't give away very much does it Exactly, seems to be delibarately ambiguous. Is it a screenshot in game of the game engine (doubtful), a pre-rendered cinema scene in the game, a picture in the game? This isn't the holodeck and games aren't so advanced and dynamic to have buildings catch on fire unless it's a pre-scripted event or in a cinema scene. Also why would the guy be riding at the player like that and seems to me that player would have to be awfully tall to see someone riding on a horse without having to look up. At one point Bethesda tried to say this was in an in-game shot from Bloodmoon. Then when further probed on it they changed their story and said 'Oh well the pose isn't in the game but it's an in game model we just posed him in a special pose.' I don't know what version of BM they got but that certainly isn't in mine. While I am sure the game will look signifigantly better than Morrowind, particularly the npcs (let's face it, without mods could they be much worse?) but that picture as far as I am concerned is just hype.

By my estimates? No sooner than 2006. That's when I'm hearing Sony is looking at releasing the PS3. If they are making it for the PS3 and Xbox2 which aren't out yet, you can be sure Bethesda knows it's a long way off and doesn't want to get caught behind the technology curve because of a long development cycle. Also, IIRC it was several years from the time Morrowind was first officially announced to its release. I wonder which will get done first, TES IV or M@HK

Tes IV ;D Then we shall have to start again Seriously though i certainly hope we are done before 2006, once i get these pesky dryads out the way i can get on with it again, and finish all the half finished jobs that i somehow just never got round to completing

Well, it has been confirmed that is in-game graphics. The only thing they have done is pose it. Make of it that you will. Remember, it will probably be a year or two till release, so I'll reserve judgement till I compare graphics to other games available then. Also, that screenshot is form elderscrolls.com and has actually been compressed. Here is a higher quality mage from www.gameinformer.com Can you notice the increased detail?

Well, it has been confirmed that is in-game graphics. The only thing they have done is pose it. They said that exact same thing about this Bloodmoon picture they posted prior to its release: www.elderscrolls.com/images/downloads/bm_nord800.bmpIt doesn't look like what's in my bloodmoon, even discounting the pose. Also since when can you pose someone in the game engine? Believe me if you could it would make modding a whole lot easier. They must be using some kind of 3D rendering program to pose the characters and then considering it an "in-game" shot because the models are the same ones used in-game. But 3D renders do all kind of nice things to make your objects look really really good. A picture of a mesh from a max render is going to look a whole lot better than a picture of that same mesh in game. The 3d program is able to devote all its and the computers resources just to making that one still picture look good. The game has to worry about a lot of other stuff and make compromises.

What you say does make more sense, I agree. But who knows what it will finally look like, because it is a couple of years off, what looks great now might be standard then. I want the game to look great, I really do, but graphics of a game 2 years of won't impress me till I see them in comparison to others available then. NWN early screenshots impressed me, but once released tha graphics, although not bad, weren't extraordinary IMHO. Same with Morrowind, so I hope Oblivion doesn't fail to impress, but won't get too excited just yet.

Well part of the problem is these RPGs have development cycles that are a lot longer than the shooters so I don't think they will ever be quite up to par with the latest shooter of the day, but I still think the next game will look pretty good. Actually I think MW is pretty decent except for the npcs which came out kind of trashy due to poor meshes and UV maps and really low res textures. Hopefully that's one area they will improve upon in the next game. I think Rhedd managed to show that you can do high quality faces with a low poly count.
