Is it poisonous then?

Nope...none of the poisonous snakes found down here are black. Most are really brightly colored except the rattler who could blend in with dead leaves. However, we'd have probably called some friends who are experienced snake handlers if it was poisonous...

The Portuguese are paranoid about 'serpentes'. The only poisonous snake here is the common adder or viper. It's very shy and will run a mile rather than attack you. And yet I keep finding dead grass snakes and the like every summer. When you ask why they kill them they always reply, 'because they're dangerous'! I even watched a workman here when we were rebuilding the barn, scurry down his ladder nearly breaking his leg in the process because a 'serpent' was curled up on top of the wall he was working on! I never saw the offending animal but it was most likely totally harmless.

When we did the barn rebuild we had a problem with a stream that ran through the middle of it when it rained. The answer was a sort of gravel collection area at the back, up hill side, and a drainpipe that carries the water through to the front. That drain has become house to a rather large snake! I've never seen the thing but our visitors remarked on it last year. I'm keeping a eye open this year! I suppose I really should put some sort of grid over the opening but that would remove yet another habitat!

The poor thing A slow worm is in fact pretty much a snake, though IIRC it's actually a legless lizard :idea2: Good name for Argonian drinking establishment

I'm not sure that this counts as a pet, or the wisdom of sharing this rather intimate encounter Often the dogs go for their run in the field and come back with one or several ticks attached Out come the 'tick tweezers' and I pull them off As I was drifting off last night (with Candice asleep on the bed) I got an itch on my leg. Woke up this morning, got in the shower and discovered an 'intruder' on my thigh :insert queasy smiley: I keep checking myself now, it gets you quite paranoid They're absolutely horrible things, they burrow into your skin Ah, the joys of country living ;D

Eeeeeewwwwwwww that's gross I hate ticks, creepy little things. I've gone all cold and funny now just thinking about it But then having come into contact with headlice on many occasions i should be used to creepy parasites.

Oddly enough (and being raised near where Bravo lives now) I haven't seen many critters around this region. Never saw a snake, hardly any mosquitoes and nil on the roaches YAY! In fact the critters I see most are spiders....some rather large bastards at times and once I found a black scorpion in our bedroom (of all places) a small one but I never knew they lived in such cool climates as this region is.
