My mate Carlos the Compute says that 90% of the problems I'm having are because, "You need to reformat the drive and do a total re-install of Windows and all your programs." He went on to say, "No, don't ask me to do it for you as I can't understand your stupid English versions of all the software!"
So guys. What's involved?
More particularly, what's involved with all those Morrowind mods? If I simply dump the whole of the Morrowind sub-directory to a CD can I simply copy it all back in having re-installed MW + BM + Trib?
And what about the video driver I had to d/l from NVidia?
I'm really not looking forward to this. I'm scared Mummy!

I should imagine if you back up the morrowind directory then replace it afterwards that will work, so long as nothing in there is causing you a problem. As for the rest, don't ask me i don't understand your stupid english software either ;D I bet HeWhoWatches will know, he seems a bit of a computer wizard

Clean format...hehehehe I useally end up doing that about every six months. First back-up any and everything you want to keep, mods, pics, max files, install files you downloaded, etc. Then restart your pc in to dos. at the command promt= C: , type format c: and hit enter......make sure you have backed up anything you wanted to have keep, since after this point it is gone forever. I always seem to forget something. insert your win 98 boot floppy and install cd, then restart your pc. it will boot up into a dos partition for and let you install windows. run windows install and follow directions it gives you. copying you morrwind dir should work, though I would still keep the preinstalled pugin avaiable to just in case it didn't.

Thanks Hopper. I've made a note of all that and I reckon it's do-able.
A couple of questions though.....
Is there a location that holds the 'Favorites' URLs in Internet Explorer?
Is it worth saving all 8000 cookies?!

Why is it that I always ask such fatuous questions!
Thanks Hopper!
Actually I know exactly why I'm asking this stuff. I'm still not happy about the moment I type in 'Format c:' at the dos prompt! I'm scared the machine, dreadful as it is now, will wind up sitting there just getting warm thinking it's a toaster or something. What happens if I've forgotten to save a vital driver? Why don't I just sell my body, (for what it's worth), and buy a new machine..........!
Why is it I ask such fatuous questions...................!

I had a really bad line this afternoon but when I tried this evening the line was great so I've enabled the Symantic Keep Alive proggie to hang onto the connection!
As far as the re-format goes, I'm still not sure that I'll bite the bullet! I went to see Carlos this morning to try and get him to agree to do the reformat and reinstall of just the OS and drivers for the video card and ADSL modem. Unfortunately he's taken off to Lisbon for a day or two so the whole project has gone on the back-burner until I see him again.
The fact is, I'm a total nerd when it comes to the hardware! I can write programs in Visual Basic and Access, I'm a wizz at Corel Draw and PhotoPaint and I'm trying to get my brain round Max. But getting into the guts of my computer is brain surgery!

A good example of my lack of ability is my trying to get the festering clock on the board to show local time. You posted that at 9:50 PM according to this machine. Does the profile hours entry take decimal hours?
Hey! I've just had a thought, UK and Portugal time are the same, (it's only the French who insist on being an hour ahead of us!), can you check your profile and tell me what you have in your time adjustment box. Please?

I have it set at +4.7 which makes it about 5 minutes faster than the computers clock so not too bad.

I would *highly* suggest doing a reinstall once every one to two years...in my case it's good because I install/uninstall games (old and new) so much that they wage wars with one another, overriding themselves with different direct x versions and such... And I noticed the performance is much better when running a clean machine...also it feels nice (yeah, neat freak...so what!?)...also you can install a newer version of windows (or older )... I dont even backup files because I have three pcs (well, one is my father's), so I just backup on his over the network...

Well mine recently had a reinstall due to a hard drive meltdown. I was glad to lose all the junk i had accumulated. All that free space..............which i have now filled up with more junk.
