Ok, so there I am just having installed XP on my second PC so that when my girlfriend is on the Internet I can use it too (and hence be less bored). So, on the plus side, XP picks up the network connection straight away (well, pretty much...) What with Zonealarm being a pain in the bottom, this takes a little bit of time, including a reinstall of Zonealarm. So great, the network works but now Mozilla won't automatically dialup when it sees there's no connection. Bugger. Now the good bit, the Internet Connection Sharing, or as MS should have called it, "give up and go away". Monkeyed about with ICS for some time with no result. Maybe it's Zonealarm I thought. I'll shut that down. Only with the latest version all of the firewall rules stay resident. Aaaaargh! So I went back to a tried and tested (not to mention far easier) solution of using AnalogX Proxy - www.analogx.com. This took five minutes and it was working. Conclusion: Microsoft hate me. That's the only possible reason why they'd put me through this stress. I've lost a whole morning through this. Maybe I can bill them for my time? ;D

Well, it's Microsoft or ...Apple; I put up with Microsoft because they can run a wonderful game called Morrowind... ;D ...are you on XP Home or XP Professional, as I have noticed Home to be lacking in some areas such as security and network...

Believe it or not, Pro. ;D ICS has never been a good piece of software though, so it's not too suprising...

...then what can I say...what else is new? Quite frankly Bill Gates does not have much competition in these areas so he's pretty laid back about it all... ...oh well; at least you've got it working!

Hmm, I'd be more inclined to say Mr.Gates is paranoid about the possibility of any potential competition eating into not only his share price but also his quest for total global domination, so he does his level best to make Windows argue with every bit of software if there's the slightest chance it duplicates any feature XP has.... Like XP's inbuilt firewall for instance - my guess is snooty Windows immediately took offence to the presence of ZoneAlarm and thought "Oh, think you can do better, eh? Well watch me throw a spanner in the works with an endless litany of port protocols! How d'ya like them apples, eh, ya third party scum?"

...good point, but I've generally found that with a bit of tinkering, you can over-ride windows' dominance to all programs... ...and then in the cases you can't, well, that's what power tools are for...

Well, it's Microsoft or ...Apple; I put up with Microsoft because they can run a wonderful game called Morrowind... ;D You never heard of Linux? If WINE could handle Morrowind, I'd dispense with Windoze altogether.... Moved to XP Pro myself about a month ago. It's finally a semi-usable and semi-secure OS from Mirco$ux... just a pity it's five years too late. XP Pro is what Win2k/ME *should* have been - an operating system that's almost secure enough to be a professional working environment, and almost stable enough to use as a gaming platform. And finally I don't have to suffer FAT32 any more.... ;D Regards Pauly TheLys Admin-thingy and Lunix advocate

*Sigh* I've GOT linux. In three different flavours, SuSE, RedHat and Mandrake (currently have Mandrake dual booted with WinXP). One slight problem - much of what I do revolves around the 'net. And BT don't provide their dialup software (which you have to have to use the connection) in any flavour other than Windows. And Wine doesn't seem to work at all I've tried that.

Ah yes, BT....don't we all just love 'em? I used to use their Surftime package in my pre broadband days, but it was so crappy I swapped over to Virgin, and stayed with them when I upgraded to broadband. Good stable service, reasonably priced - not sure if it would solve your dialup software issue though because I use Windoze (just recently moved from Win98 to XP). Mind you, when I set up my broadband connection on this new hd with XP on it, all I had to do was put my name & password into the modem's connection box and off it went - no dialler software or nowt. Might be worth looking into if you ever consider a change

I use Virgin as well, always have done so have no comments as to BT but Virgin have never given me any trouble at all. What i like most is the fact that it has no hidden charges at all, i just pay one monthly fee and i can be on here all day long all month long if i like, i'm just showing off now ;D Oh and it's broadband as well

I use Virgin as well, always have done so have no comments as to BT but Virgin have never given me any trouble at all. Sadly I'm back on AOL (at home) on a crappy dialup. Fortunately my Lunix (Mandrake) box is in bits right now (*another* Seagate hard drive failure - that's three now ) so I need not worry about dialup issues. Back in the good ol' days I managed to get RedHat working with the old BT ClickFree (?) connection, although I seem to recall it was a nightmare to set up. Didn't much help that the old BT package was fairly naff and disconnected frequently. I really miss my old Telewest cable modem, even if their customer service and tech support departments left a lot to be desired... Regards, Pauly TheLys blah

I'm still reeling from the fact I have access to broadband at all actually....ADSL arrived in my area just before Christmas last year. That's because where I live oop north, I doubted there'd ever be enough interest in broadband to make it worthwhile for BT to upgrade the local exchange, seeing as the population here largely consists of very short people who walk on all fours, wear the same dirty woollen coats, and say "Baa" a lot

Still not sure how i got it, it wasn't available here then suddenly it was. They did say before you needed to be within three miles of the exchange, i live in a village about two miles from town and the exchange is smack bang in the middle of town, so i was probably out by half a mile or something silly if you took a straight line I think it may have been because the factory estate is on my side of the town and i should imagine the businesses wanted broadband Still however it happened i'm just glad it did. Wonder what sheep do with it then
