I haven't read them yet, my sister got me the trilogy for my birthday last month. It was featured on the bbc's big read and sounded very interesting. It came third out of one hundred, LOTR was first of course. Pratchett had five books in the top 100 more than anybody else ;D
This is totally off topic though so just to get it back on, Quillions.

Totally on topic.
I've just been looking at that site with the sword part names in. From their home page you can get to a page selling LOTR weapon look-a-likes. My next weapon. One of the fighting knives of Legolas. No Gandalf staff unfortunately!

Ok, I've textured it, so is this any better?

It looks like brass or at least metal, i can see that on a sword alright. BTW i posted three times because it didn't seem to finish doing it so i pressed it again, still didn't so i did it again. In future i shall check first I thought i'd deleted the extras but i see i missed one.

Thanks HWW. You've given me something to aim at. Is it OK to post a wip picture? (I'm just working on the, to use the absolutely correct word, hilt!)

Yep, that's a good idea... always good to see what people are working on!
Liked the dagger by the way Cali, very cool.

This is as far as I've got. Well, that assumes I can get the picture to show! Tiz a bit brassy, but I reckon I'll suss out how to deaden that later. The cross-guard looks OK, maybe a bit abrupt changes in direction? Now, back to Help to find out how to get my bitmap onto the grip. Coo! Just previewed it! I'm amazed that I managed to get the image in. "Oh no! There's no stopping him now!", they cried.

Looking seriously good there! To apply bitmaps, go to material editor and choose one of the 3d balls. Then change the shader to TES Shader and go down to where it says mapping, click the check box next to base on and select your bmp, dds file (or whatever you're using). Also change diffuse to white. It might not show up in max, mine didn't but you could see it in the render window. As long as you have a texture applied, you can always change the nif later with niftexture. For some reason, if there is no texture to begin with, it won't let you select a new one.
Think all this is correct, but good to check it against Neumans pants max file just in case.

Theres a little cube button near the top of the material editor that says show material in window or some such thing. Without it in front of me i can't remember but anyway press the little cube.
I can't load dds in max isn't there a plugin for this or something.

Well, that worked! (And it's double sided too!) Not a sound from me now until I get the first 'stab' at the blade done!

Great texture there (shame about the pun, heheheh! ;D... Can't wait to see the blade when it's done ... Perhaps if you used that hilt as a base, you could do variations of long and short blades and have a whole set. That'd make a nice little mod on its own if you played with the stats in the Construction Set. Just a thought.

Nice job, but isn't the golden part there a bit too bright for your really cool design on the grip of the hilt?
Can't wait to see the blade...great job on the max model though! Awesome work...

Yep, that gold is toooo brassy Bravo 1, I'll have to come back to it later. It's now quarter past one in the morning and I've had enough for the day. Here is the current blade attached. I need to do a lot more to the junction with the hilt and the tip is, well, odd! I just slapped a bright chrome texture on it as it really didn't look good in magenta. G'night all
