I have tried out this patch now and it works perfectly for me. If you keep your fps_opt thingy running you can get a really good idea of the fps that you're getting. For example, in Balmora Extended if I wanted to keep the fps up to between 12 and 17 I could only see about 20 ft. To see further I would have to manually drop the fps down to something like 5! With the fpu2sse patch installed my 12-17 fps allows me to see at least four times as far. I can actually see right across Balmora Extended now if I'm prepared to drop the fps to about 10. It works with a Pentium 4 certainly. So it gets a from me.

I didn't think it would make that much difference, how powerful is your PC, Mebyon?

Regan: Pentium 4 2.5Ghz (Probably need an upgrade to run Oblivion!) Oops sorry Cali. Here's what I did: Unzipped Regan's stuff into a directory called fpu2 on my E: drive but let's pretend it was on the C: drive for simplicity. (Note, 8 chars or less for the directory name. We're going into good old dos for this!) Took a COPY of Morrowind.exe and added it to the fpu2 directory. Renamed it 'Original Morrowind.exe'. That way if everything blows up I have two copies of the original morrowind.exe, one in the morrowind directory and one in the fpu2 directory. Took ANOTHER copy of morrowind.exe and put that in the fpu2 directory. This is the one that we'll be changing. OK now we follow Regan's instructions. Open the dos window. at the C:\ prompt type "cd fpu2" without the quotes. Prompt changes to C:\fpu2 at that prompt type "fpu2sse.bat >morrowind.exe" no quotes again. Now either go off and put the kettle on or watch the blinking lights. You'll get a series of cryptic messages and about three 'Oops there's a problem' messages. The program will also seem to hang for about two minutes in the middle. If you have gone to put the kettle on these will not worry you! Finally it will stop doing it's thing and tell you so. Copy the morrowind.exe file from fpu2 to morrowind directory. That's it. Run MW and check that everything looks the same, but faster! If you have a problem, no problemo. Copy that 'Original Morrowind.exe' from fpu2 to the MW directory, delete the corrupt morrowind.exe and rename the Original Morowind.exe to morrowind.exe A very interesting aside. The instruction "fpu2sse.bat >morrowind.exe" specifies a target file, (morrowind.exe) which is an illegal dos filename, 9 characters! As I said, interesting!

Um. What cpu do you have in your machine? I 'think' that this is really for Pentium 3 or 4 cpus. This is getting far too techie for me, I'm out of here! Oh yes, the extra '>'. Blame Regan for that one! Caught me out too, but I'd forgotten!

Well i did ask Regan about that, and reading the thread it did appear that it would work with Athlon ones, although the readme say's different. Obviously it wont, or at least not with mine

Oh dear, a pity. Here are two screenshots just to see how far I can see over Balmora: Without fpu2sse: and with it: Both at maximum viewing distance so fps is 5. I trhink that the ability to see further is the most important improvement. See 'em before they see you!

Very nice! Are all the bugs ironed out of it? ...the view distance really adds to the atmosphere...you should have seen the look on my face when I saw the 'with fps opt' and 'w/out fps opt' screenies for the first time! ...so is that at maxed out view distance? (or can it go more? )
